Why our energy-saving led display can save more than 50% power consumption

1) Using super high luminous LED lamps, to save 30%.

Unique feature of the super high luminous lamps is more brilliant and less power dissipation. For instance, when lamps working under the same condition of high illumination, forward current running in the common sort of lamps is ≧16 mA, but for super high luminous lamps that we use, it is just ≦10 mA, the point is to save 30% power consumption in this way. .

2) Using the power boxes with PFC, to save 15%.

In fact, when it transfers AC into DC, the efficiency is high up to 85%. Some other power boxes extensive used without the function of PFC, the transferring efficiency is just close to 60%~70%. The difference turns to be 15% power consumption.

3) Adopting to multiple controlling technique, to save 5% ~8%

We use temperature control, brightness control, drive control, etc, to make our LED displays adaptive and environment-friendly. The methods can save the power consumption in the range of 5% to 8%. The capacity of adaptation hints not only saving power consumption, but also more convenient and more environmental protection.

The words above conclude that contrast to traditional solution, super high luminous LED lamps(30%) + power boxes with PFC(15%) + multiple controlling methods(5%~8%)  ≥ 50% of power consumptio

What is LED screen grey level?

Grey level: A calibrated sequence of grey tones, ranging from black to white. In remote sensing, electromagnetic radiation falling on a photosensitive receiver generates an electrical current proportional to the intensity of the radiation. The receiver is usually tuned to specific wavelength bands and the signal from each receiver is amplified and its intensity classified into different levels, usually 0 (black) to 256. These are the digital numbers of each of the pixel units that together make up a remotely sensed frame. In multi-spectral scanning systems, the digital numbers are classified into grey-scale bands, of which there are usually 10 to 12, but up to 256 shades of grey (brightness) may be used.

LED display Ingress Protection (IP65)

Ingress Protection (IP) is a European rating that describes the degree of protection provided by an enclosure of electrical equipment. The rating system consists of the letters IP followed by two numbers:

The first number indicates the degree of protection against solid foreign object ingress.

The second number indicates the degree of protection against liquid ingress.

According to this system an IP65 enclosure will not allow the ingress of dust and is protected against jets of water from any direction. IP65 enclosures are ideal therefore for use in wet and wash-down environments for example food preparation areas.

For outdoor LED display it is usually IP65 front and IP43 Rear

And for outdoor indoor LED screen it is usually IP31.

What are refresh rate and frame rate?

The refresh rate is the number of times a display’s image is repainted or refreshed per second. As it denotes a frequency of a process, the refresh rate is expressed in hertz. That is, a refresh rate of 75 Hz means the image is refreshed 75 times in one second.

Frame rate, or frame frequency, is the frequency (rate) at which an imaging device produces unique consecutive images called frames. The term applies equally well to computer graphics, video cameras, film cameras, and motion capture systems. Frame rate is most often expressed in frames per second (FPS), and is also expressed in progressive scan monitors as hertz (Hz).

Our LED display/screen use Micro block MIB5124IC usually can make the refresh rate reach 1920. If used MBI5151 / MBI5253  these high refresh rate IC then can get the refresh rate of more than 3840HZ for our LED video wall.

What is vewing angle of LED DISPLAY ?

Viewing angle is the maximum angle at which a display can be viewed with acceptable visual performance. It includes horizontal viewing angle and vertical viewing angle.

Usually the SMD LED display viewing angle will be wider than the DIP LED screen.

Drive Method, driving IC and Power supply

Drive Method: always we use static, 1/4 scan, 1/8 scan, 1/16 scan, the latter one contributes to less brightness than the former. We always use the static outdoor, and use the different kinds of scan indoor.

Driving IC is the generic term for several kinds of IC, that are used to control the LED lamps, and as a bridge between the control system and lamps.

Power supply: a kind of device that used as a transfer from 220V AC into 5V DC. It always seems like a box in the cabinet.

What are LED Type, led module size and module resolution?

LED Type is the description of LED lamp, for instance, the brand, the shape in physical, the size of the lamp, etc. For example Nichia brand LED lamp, Cree brand Lamp, Epistar LED lamp etc

Module size is the measurement of a module. For example of 320X160mm, 160x160mm, 256x256mm, 250x250mm led module sizes etc

Module resolution is the number of pixels per module.

LED Display Contrast

Along with proper brightness, a display must have high contrast for good readability. Contrast is the difference between the background’s “off state” (blank display area) versus the “on state” (illuminated display area). High contrast increases the readability of a message, much like white text on a black background, causing readers to focus on what needs to be seen. The highest contrast appears in a display with a dark border and a consistent dark black background across the entire display with minimal sunlight reflection. A louver system provides shading and black, non-reflective materials ensure the least amount of reflection. Polycarbonate or acrylic face material may provide as high a contrast as flat black paint or a black potting encapsulated. Usually the Black LEDs will have high contrast than the white LEDs

LED Display Color depth

"Dimming" and "shading" refer to entirely different functions and the terms should not be interchanged. The word “dimming” refers to a uniform brightness adjustment across the entire display to correct the intensity for ease of reading different ambient light conditions. "Shading" or color depth, affects the light output variations of each individual red, green and blue LED to create images within the display.

Calculation explanation: Each individual red, green and blue LED be in one of two states, either on or off. This example uses a color data processing of 5 bits for each color is 2 to the 5th power and multiplying each color’s depth provides the overall color depth of 32,768 colors.

Although "dimming" and "shading" have different meanings, some manufacturers will combine grey-scale shading values with dimming values to create a color specification that appears more impressive on paper than it is capable of producing in the field. Combining shading values with overall dimming values is a deceiving and misleading practice. Below is an incorrect calculation that includes dimming as part of the color depth:

25 * 25 * 25*32 dimming = 1 million colors

LED Display Lifetime

The operational lifetime of an LED Display is determined by the lifetime of the LEDs. LED Manufacturers estimate the LED lifetime to be 100,000 hours under certain operating conditions. LED Display end of lifetimes is when the frontal brightness has decreated to 50% of original brightness.

Three primary factors determine LED lifetime:

Manufacturing process of the LED

Driving (powering) method of the LED

Temperatures present at the LED die during operation

LED thermal management is vitally important to maintaining LED lifetime. Increasing the power through an LED increases brightness but reduces its lifetime due to increased heat generation. Increased exposure to higher temperature also shortens the lifetime. LED thermal management can only be done through the LED lead frame by conducting the heat to a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and by allowing airflow to cool the LED lead frame.

LED Display components must be designed to handle a wide rang of outdoor environmental factors, such as temperature and humidity. All components must be coated to protect from possible corrosion.

What is LED?

LED is standed for Light Emitting Diode, a kind of semiconductor which is used to give and receive the electronic signal into infrared rays or light, using the characteristics of compound semiconductor. This is used for household appliances, remote controller, electric bulletin board, various kinds of automation appliances.

An LED is a solid-state electronic device than emits light when energized by applying power. The LED die is mounted to a lead frame (see below) which is encapsulated in an epoxy lens. The epoxy lens directs the emitted light and protects the LED die from physical damage. The lead frame provides the electrical connections, the physical mounting and a thermal heat sink to remove the heat generated within the LED. A good LED display manufacturer must have an in-depth understanding of LEDs and their properties, as well as use high-quality components in order to develop effective designs than stand the test of time.

What Causes the LED to Emit Light and What Determines the Color of the Light?

When sufficient voltage is applied to the chip across the leads of the LED, electrons can move easily in only one direction across the junction between the p and n regions. In the p region there are many more positive than negative charges. In the n region the electrons are more numerous than the positive electric charges. When a voltage is applied and the current starts to flow, electrons in the n region have sufficient energy to move across the junction into the p region. Once in the p region the electrons are immediately attracted to the positive charges due to the mutual Coulomb forces of attraction between opposite electric charges. When an electron moves sufficiently close to a positive charge in the p region, the two charges "re-combine". Each time an electron recombines with a positive charge, electric potential energy is converted into electromagnetic energy. For each recombination of a negative and a positive charge, a quantum of electromagnetic energy is emitted in the form of a photon of light with a frequency characteristic of the semi-conductor material (usually a combination of the chemical elements gallium, arsenic and phosphorus). Only photons in a very narrow frequency range can be emitted by any material. LED's that emit different colors are made of different semi-conductor materials, and require different energies to light them.

What is the difference between real pixel LED screens and virtual pixel LED screens?

With the virtual pixel technology, the LED display will appear a more clear vision. Theoretically the resolution will be 4 times of a real pixel technology LED display. The difference of a real a virtual pixel LED screen of LED display can be seen in the next pictures.

Virtual Pixel LED ScreenReal Pixel LED Screen

How do virtual LED screens work?

Below you can clearly see how the virtual pixels are made, we surely recommend you a virtual display, even so our new technology of Dot Matrix it’s still better than virtual pixels, because the three colors RGB are in the same dot or pixel, just like the SMD technology and also the Dot Matrix have a horizontal viewing angle of over 160 degrees. The virtual pixel LED screens have a horizontal viewing angle of upto 130 degrees.

Do I need a wide LED screen to play 16:9 movies?

Playing Videos on LED Screens

To play videos on a LED screen a video file will be loaded into the LED screen software if the format is in AVI or MPEG. Another option is that the video(s) or publicity spot(s) is placed on a DVD and can be loaded with the LED screen software directly from the DVD. But the question will be: "In what aspect ratio I have to produce my video?". The answer is very simple and will be explained in this article!

Wide Screen and Letterbox Mode for LED Screens

A DVD-player or blu-ray can be connected to any LED screen, but with a Widescreen LED screen you will get the most viewing enjoyment. DVD-Video supports multiple aspect ratios. Video stored on a DVD in 16:9 format is horizontally squeezed to a 4:3 (standard TV) ratio. On Wide-screen LED screens, the squeezed image is enlarged by the LED screen to an aspect ratio of 16:9.

DVD video players and video files output widescreen video on LED screens in three different ways

Letterbox (for 4:3 LED screens)

Pan & scan (for 4:3 screens)

Anamorphic or unchanged (for wide LED screens)

In widescreen or letterbox mode, if a movie is wider than 16:9 (and most are), additional thin black bars will be added to the top and bottom at production time or the sides will be cropped. Video stored in 4:3 format is not changed by the player. It will appear normally on a 4:3 screen. Widescreen systems will either stretch it horizontally or add black bars to the sides.

Advanced Live Video Processor for LED Screens

With our advanced live video processor, the image can be adjusted horizontally an video d vertically to make the image or video fit the screen. Another option is to produce the video in the right aspect ratio of the screen, due to the fact that some screens do have odd sizes which makes the aspect ratio wider or longer.

Conclusion Aspect Ratio LED Screens

It is not necessary to have a wide screen LED screen to play different kind of movies, clips and pictures and animations. A LED screen can play any kind of aspect ratio, although it might be possible that the image will be cropped leaving a black line at the top, bottom, left or right of the image. But with the advanced live video processor it can be eliminated although the image will deform a bit depending on the aspect ratio.

What is a LED Screen?

A LED screen is a video display which uses light-emitting diodes. An LED panel is a small display, or a component of a larger display. They are typically used outdoors in store led signs and outdoor led billboards, and in recent years have also become used in destination led signs on public transport vehicles. LED panels are sometimes used as form of lighting, for the purpose of general illumination, task lighting, or even stage lighting rather than display.

Types of LED Screens

There are two types of LED panels: conventional DIP LEDs and surface-mounted device (SMD) panels. Most outdoor led displays and some indoor led screens are built around DIP LEDs, also known as individually mounted LEDs. A cluster of red, green, and blue diodes is driven together to form a full-color pixel, usually square in shape. These pixels are spaced evenly apart and are measured from center to center for absolute pixel resolution. The largest LED display in the world is over 1,500 foot (457.2 m) long and is located in Las Vegas, Nevada covering the Fremont Street Experience. The largest LED television in the world, the Center Hung Video Display at Cowboys Stadium, is 160 by 72 feet (49 by 22 m), 11,520-square-foot (1,070 m2).

Most indoor screens on the market are built using SMD technology—a trend that is now extending to the outdoor market. An SMD pixel consists of red, green, and blue diodes mounted on a chipset, which is then mounted on the driver PC board. The individual diodes are smaller than a pinhead and are set very close together. The difference is that the maximum viewing distance is reduced by 25% from the discrete diode screen with the same resolution.

Indoor use generally requires a screen that is based on SMD technology and has a minimum brightness of 800 candelas per square meter (cd/m2, sometimes informally called nits). This will usually be more than sufficient for corporate and retail applications, but under high ambient-brightness conditions, higher brightness may be required for visibility. Fashion and auto shows are two examples of high-brightness stage lighting that may require higher LED brightness. Conversely, when a screen may appear in a shot on a television studio set, the requirement will often be for lower brightness levels with lower color temperatures (common displays have a white point of 6500 to 9000 K, which is much bluer than the common lighting on a television production set).

For outdoor use, at least 5,000 cd/m2 is required for most situations, whereas higher-brightness types of up to 10,000 cd/m2 cope even better with direct sunlight on the screen. (The brightness of LED panels can be reduced from the designed maximum, if required.)

Suitable locations for large display panels are identified by factors such as line of sight, local authority planning requirements (if the installation is to become semi-permanent), vehicular access (trucks carrying the screen, truck-mounted screens, or cranes), cable runs for power and video (accounting for both distance and health and safety requirements), power, suitability of the ground for the location of the screen (if there are no pipes, shallow drains, caves, or tunnels that may not be able to support heavy loads), and overhead obstructions.

What Is The Difference Bertween SMD And DIP LEDs ?

SMD is the acronym of Surface Mounting Device and it is the new frontier of the electronic visualization technology: the revolution created by the SMD technology is represented by the miniaturization of all the electronic components, LEDs included. The SMD components are mounted on the surface of the electronic board, without passing through it as any other electronic component utilizing the former technology, called PHT (acronym of “Plating Through Holes”).

The SMD TOP LED is therefore mounted on the external part of the board (without the anode and cathode passing through holes), as described in the image below (proportions are real): LEDs utilizing the SMD technology are different from the PHT LEDs for another important characteristic: thanks to the miniaturization indeed it is possible to put 3 LEDs of different colors within the same case (as in the picture on the top-right), resulting in a three colors LED.

The possibility to visualize three colors at the same time (Red, Green and Blue) on a single LED allow to create large  digital billboards with an even smaller pitch (the distance between pixels) therefore resulting in a higher resolution and quality image.

What Is The RESOLUTION Of A Display?

The resolution is nothing else but the number of pixels present on each square meter. The resolution is therefore opposite proportional to the pixel pitch: smaller is the distance between two pixels, higher is the resolution (because on the surface of the LED billboard is present an higher number of LEDs).

For example a 20 mm pitch screen has a resolution of 2304 pixels: this measure is obtained dividing the total length of a single module (975 mm) by the pixel pitch (in this case 20 mm) resulting in the number of pixels on a single line: 975:20 = 48 pixels. Multiplying the number of pixels present on a single line by the total number of lines the result is the total number of pixels present on the screen’s surface, also called Resolution. In our example, 48 x 48 = 2304 pixel in total. Given this formula, it is possible to calculate that a 30 mm pitch screen has a resolution of 1024 pixel per module, while a 10 mm pitch screen has a resolution of 9216 pixels per module. It is important to notice that reducing of only few millimeters the pixel pitch, the LED density (and therefore the resolution) increase exponentially.

Remember: Smaller is the pitch ? Shorter is the minimum viewing distance ? Higher is the total number of pixels present on the LED video wall ? Higher is the quality image ? Higher is the screen’s cost per area.

What Is The DEFINITION Of A Display?

The “definition” is the number of vertical and horizontal pixels that are on the entire digital billboard. For example, some standard definitions are 96x64 pixels (=low definition); 256x192 pixels (=medium definition): 640x480 pixels (=high definition). The definition is therefore related to the pixel pitch, the distance between the pixels.

To simplify and clarify the terminology, it is possible to say that the RESOLUTION is referred to the single module, while the DEFINITION is referred to the entire screen, once that all modules have been mounted.

What Is The PITCH (Or “Dot Pitch” Or “Pixel Pitch”)?

The pitch of a LED screen defines the distance between the pixels, expressed in millimeters. This fundamental measure determines the characteristics and the performances of a LED maxi screens: the pitch indeed is a defining factor of a screen’s viewing distance:

1. The smaller is the pitch, the shorter is the minimum viewing distance, the higher is the total number of pixels present on the screen (and therefore higher is the screen’s cost per area).

2. The bigger is the pitch, the longer is the minimum viewing distance, the lower is the total number of pixels present on the digital billboard (and therefore lower is the screen’s cost per area) The pixel pitch therefore determines the LEDs density, which is usually called Resolution. It is important to notice that while reducing the pixel pitch, the LED density increase exponentially: for example, reducing the pitch by the 50% on the number of pixels grow of 4 times.

What Is The REFRESH RATE And Why Is It Important?

The refresh rate indicates the number of times that the image refreshes every second. For example, a PC monitor has a refresh rate of 72 Hertz (Hz) and therefore refresh all the pixels of the LED billboard, from top to bottom, 72 times every second. The refresh rate is fundamental because determines the image’s quality: if it is too low, the human eye can see a flicker that causes headache and eye’s damages.

To provide a comparison, most of the TV monitors have a refresh rate of 50Hz and only few products of the last generation have a 100Hz refresh rate. Euro Display’s screens have a 240 Hz refresh rate, which is almost triple of the most advanced cathode tube technologies. This measure is ulterior prove of Euro Displays’ quality and state-of-the-art technology, result of years of research in the laboratories and on the field.

● on the side of a building or structure

● on streestanding feet

● on a pole

● on goal post structure

● hanging (for indoor applications)

The  Effective Control Distance Of LED Displays and LED digital billboards

In this article, we will explain the effective control distance of full color LED billboards and LED screens signals transferred with a normal network cable. Generally, the signal cable of a LED display is RJ45 which is a standard network cable. The control distance can reach up to 100m, which is enough for most clients needS. A LED screen will be installed with a structure, the function of which is not only to back up the LED display and decoration, but also, there will be a small control room inside the LED screen structure or nearby the LED screen structure where a PC will be placed to control the LED screen.

Economic LED Screen Controlling

The most economic way for controlling a LED screen is using the basic RJ45 signal cable. But for some special clients, they will not place the control PC nearby the LED display, because it's not convenient for them to edit and program the content nearby the LED display. Those clients will request for a longer control distance. In this condition, a fibre-optic solution will be chosen. And in this way, the control distance from the LED screen to control room where the controlling computer is placed can reach up to 10Km, or even more. This will bring a relative high cost which won't make it an economic solution.

Usually for LED screens and LED displays that will be controlled over a long distance, an internet connection can be choosen too. This only applies if an internet connection is available for both locations to control the LED display and to control the PC. We recomment to control the LED screen remotely by the internet of course.

LED Displays Controlling Remotely

For most application, the signal from the controlling PC to the LED display screen is transferred via a RJ45 cable. The distance of 100m is normally far than enough for most clients enough for most clients' requirements and most economic way. But some clients would like to control the display in a further distance than 100m, or even thousands of Km. For these cases the remote control by internet will be chosen.

For to realize controlling remotely the LED screen by internet you need the following:

The internet connection ror both locations, for the LED screen as well as for the controlling PC;

Two PC's, one for to place at the LED screen and the other one to control the LED screen remotely.

At last, we will introduce the signal transfer in a simple way. For most people it's not strange to know that one PC can control another PC through internet. And the essential of LED display remote control is the same. But our software will combine and set the control in a convenient method. And the operator will easily control the display from quite a far distance. For the detailed information please ask our sales for the manual of control system.

How to Choose an Air Conditioner for LED Displays

For hot areas it would be wisely to use a cooling system like an air conditioner to cool your LED display to minimize failures and expand the life time of your LED display. An air conditioner is nowadays a not very expensive cooling system but can be made expensive due to the power consumption of it. For that it is wisely to buy an energy efficient air conditioner for your LED display without having troubles in the near future.

To buy an energy-efficient air conditioner for LED display, you must first determine what capacity, or size, you need. This is important for two reasons:

An undersized unit won’t cool adequately a LED display in extremely hot weather.

An oversized air conditioner can also adversely affect your comfort. The unit may switch on and off too often, without running long enough to dehumidify the LED display properly or cool the space uniformly. And it will consume more energy than necessary.

Step 1: Calculate basic cooling capacity you will need for your LED display to meet the typical cooling load

Use this table to find the basic cooling capacity in Btu/h you’ll need based on total LED display area to be cooled.

LED Display Basic Cooling Capacity by Total Area of the LED Display

For a 22.6m2 (240 sq. ft.) LED display, the basic cooling capacity will be 6000 Btu/h. If the cooling capacity of the air conditioner is more than 12,000 Btu/h, consider installing two smaller units. Otherwise, a single unit might require a larger amperage circuit (20–30 amperes) or a dedicated 240-volt circuit; consult an electrician for more information.

Step 2: Additional factors that can influence the loading capacity of the air conditioner for LED Displays

Answer the questions below. If a question doesn’t apply to your situation, leave the space blank. Then add or subtract from the basic cooling capacity to arrive at the approximate size of room air conditioner you should buy.

LED Display Capacity Deviations determined by External Variables of the LED Display
